Being a DJ in Las Vegas: What Nobody Tells You

people ask me what it's like to be a DJ in Las Vegas. I tell them it's not what they think.

they think: Vegas. clubs. lights. crowds losing their minds every night.

here's what it actually is: loading equipment into your car at 11pm. playing a wedding where the family requested no bass. getting paid in cash that you forget to deposit for two weeks. coming home at 3am and trying not to wake anyone up.

that's the job. most of the time.

the good nights

and then there are the nights that make all of it worth it.

life is beautiful 2021 — I remember watching a set and thinking: this is what music is supposed to feel like. that's the bar. every time I step behind the decks, I'm chasing that. not always getting there, but chasing it.

when a room locks in — when the energy shifts and everybody feels it at the same time — there's nothing else like it. Vegas crowds know music. they've heard the best. they don't fake it.

the weird gigs

there's the quinceañera where the sound system cut out mid-set. there's the corporate event where someone requested "something without a beat." there's the venue that promised a booth and gave me a folding table.

you learn to read rooms fast in this city. Vegas will humble you.

my daughter watching from the couch

my setup lives in the living room. it doesn't fit anywhere else.

my daughter has watched me set up probably a hundred times. she's not impressed. she'll walk right past the decks to get to the kitchen. that's humbling in the best way.

but every now and then she asks what a song is. and I know I'm doing something right.

I spent years reading rooms as a DJ. learning what makes people feel something. what makes them laugh, what makes them move, what makes them come back.

that's exactly what ever sausage fest is. a room I built online. same instincts, different medium.
